Bojangle's Children's Sanatorium
This hospital was initially opened as a TB sanatorium in 1932. It was created by the superintendent of the Western State Hospital as a special medical unit. This went on until the TB epidemic was no more and the property was taken over by the state in 1975. The name was changed and the focus of treatment was also changed to treat children with mental disabilities. Adolescent Units of the nearby state hospital were transferred here and no patient was to be older than 21 years of age. The hospital began to suffer from the stock market crash in 1987. The state needed to perform substantial budget cuts and institutions like this became underfunded. The facility closed its doors for good in 1996 and all remaining patients were relocated to a new facility nearby.
