Fort Howard Veterans Hospital
Located on historic Fort Howard MD, this hospital opened its doors in 1943. The Veterans Administration took over the entire property in 1941 and began to move operations to the site little by little. The hospital itself was five stories and had a 377-bed capacity. It was originally meant to handle general medicine and general surgical procedures. By the early 2000's, the hospital building had many structural issues. The patient population was decreasing due to the increase in outpatient services. In 2002 it was decided to close the hospital and move any remaining patients to a nearby facility.
