Glenn Dale Isolation Hospital and Sanatorium
The Glenn Dale Hospital opened in 1934 as a TB sanatorium. It was a large campus that consisted of 23 buildings spread across 216 acres of land. Glenn Dale was considered to be the "most up to date and complete" facility of its kind at the time. The campus was separated into two sections, one for children and one for adults. Each had their own large hospital building and smaller supportive buildings. In 1960, the TB epidemic was eliminated and Glenn Dale switched focus to treating persons with long-term and chronic illness. The facility failed its 1982 inspection for fire and safety. Extremely high amounts of asbestos were discovered. A price estimate was given of $20 million to renovate the hospital complex to be compliant with safety code. Instead, the closed the hospital that year. Today the buildings sit abandoned and vandalized beyond recognition. The campus is regularly patrolled by Park Police.
