As I tiptoed from room to room, it was difficult to shake the uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. After all, this wasn't the first time I had explored alone, and I had been in buildings that much more accurately fit the description of what you envision a spooky old abandoned hospital would look like. However, the overwhelming feeling of "you shouldn't be here" amplified with every turn of a corner. I'm not really sure what I expected to happen here. This hospital was fully powered and intact, so no real chance of becoming injured from the building falling apart. It also wasn't in a bad neighborhood, or in the middle of nowhere, where I might encounter angry hobos or worse, Piney's. It was just a small community hospital in an otherwise very boring neighborhood.
I had been eyeing up this particular spot for a while, and was happy to claim it as my own. It didn't have any wild urban legends attached to it, nor did it a feature a 20 body morgue. But I had it to myself, and that was all that mattered at the time. I made my way in by climbing atop a trashcan and squeezing through a tiny window that had been left slightly ajar. These days, I'm a little older and a little worse for wear, so I'm not quite sure I could replicate such maneuvers. As I tumbled past the curtains, I found myself on the floor of a medical supply closet. I brushed myself off, stood up, adjusted my camera and found myself face to face with some sort of dummy head. I couldn't quite figure out what his purpose was, but his removable teeth were enough to freak me out and make me quickly exit the room.
I had high hopes that the rest of the facility would be equally as filled with fun goodies, but unfortunately this was not the case. Overall, it was just the skeleton of a building with all the fun parts removed. The continuous beeping of an alarm only added to my anxiety, as I knew I had no quick way out should any of the security monitoring be functional. I held my breath as I pushed open the door to the brain of the hospital to face my fears. As my eyes quickly skimmed the flashing lights of the control panels, I determined that they were of no threat. I didn't spend too much longer exploring here, finding empty room after empty room to be a bit dull. I saw myself out through a fire escape door that was no longer connected to any alarms, looking over my shoulder just a few more times to make sure I was indeed still alone.
