Diocese Medical Center
This historic hospital center was established in one of New Jersey's largest cities in 1867. It was by a religious affiliation of sisterhood to serve the rising poor immigrant population within the city. The hospital had a capacity of 357 beds and was designated as a teaching hospital for the state. The hospital saw many "firsts" in the State of New Jersey. The first open heart surgery in the state was performed here, it was the first hospital to develop a cardiac catheterization program, and was the first hospital to open an HIV testing center.
Much like any historic hospital, the beautiful old building was closed in favor of a modern facility that still operates today. The historic hospital was left abandoned. The operating hospital struggles with possible closure and has filed for bankruptcy not long ago. The city attempted to renovate the historic structure, only to be forced to abandon their project due to money concerns. Today the historic building sits without its fate decided.
