Newcomb Hospital
Located in Vineland NJ, the Newcomb Hospital was built in 1924. Money was donated for the construction of the hospital by Leverett Newcomb who was a prominent attorney in Vineland. Leverett donated about $225,000 and the plot of land for the hospital covered two city blocks. When the hospital opened its doors in 1924, it housed the most modern equipment of the time period medical era. Some of the equipment included dishwashers and x-ray equipment. Leverett Newcomb passed away in the year 1926 and his remains are buried under a beech tree in the hospital parking lot.
Through the 1950's and 60's many additions were made to the original hospital structure. The hospital itself focuses heavily on maternal-neonatal care. Through all renovations, the rotunda remained original up until its closure. This section of the hospital was well remembered by staff through the years. The patient population began to fall at the hospital and it was sold to the South Jersey Healthcare Group. The SJHG eventually closed the hospital for good in 2004. In the years following its closure, the property switched hands between developers numerous times as it fell into disrepair. Demolition of the hospital began in 2016 which left the local community shattered as the hospital center was a part of many peoples lives in Vineland.
