Staten Island Ship Graveyard
The site is described best as being similar to an automobile salvage yard. Abandoned boats would be stripped for any valuable parts to sell. Some boats stuck in the graveyard are quite historic. the USS PC-1264 was the first WWII US Navy ship to have an African American crew and it now sits abandoned in the graveyard. The PS General Slocum was a passenger steamboat that caught fire and sank in the East River in 1904. 1,021 people died in the disaster. The FDNY Fireboat Abram S Hewitt served as a floating command post during the catastrophe. This iconic fireboat now rests in the Staten Island Ship Graveyard as well.
