Sacred Heart Home and School
The Sacred Heart Home and School was established in 1938 in Coopersburg, PA. It served as an orphanage and educational facility for the children living there. It provided a space for children, regardless of race or sex, who fell onto hard times during the Great Depression and WWII era. It was staffed by the nuns of the Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Church. The structure would be damaged by a fire in 1939 and a tornado in 1949. Following the tornado in 1949, the institution constructed a new chapel. It also added on a modern gym in 1958. Nearby DeSales University, then called Allentown College of St Francis DeSales, would use the gym at the Sacred Heart Home before the University built their gym building (Billera Hall). The school and home closed down in 1974. Other entities have used the building since but not for any substantial length of time. The property sat abandoned, used for local fire and police training. The entire building was demolished in 2014.
