Shriners Temple
Construction on the "Shriners Temple" began in 1907 and is considered to be the nation's most significant example of Moorish Revival Architecture. The building was unlike any other of its kind in the world and was virtually untouched until 1931. It was in 1931 that the main auditorium was renovated into having a sloped floor instead of a flat floor. The temple was the main center of entertainment within the community in which it is located. The site saw weddings, various celebrations, worships, rituals, and entertainment events of all kind. New wedding venues, ballrooms, movie theaters, and entertainment halls eventually forced the old building to close. The City Chamber of Congress purchased the building in 2005 and began restoration efforts in 2008. Unfortunately, the preservation effort came to a halt after the financial crisis of the time and the property fell into neglect. Recently a new group has come forward with the funds a mission to preserve and restore this beautiful building to working order.
