Warren State Hospital

The Warren State Hospital was established in 1873 to serve the northwestern section of the state. Construction began in 1874 and was completed in 1882. The hospital opened its doors to patients in October of 1880. The main building follows the Kirkbride plan and the campus housed several other small buildings scattered about. The hospital was one of the first to establish a training school for nurses in 1901. Its population peaked at 2,562 residents in the year 1947. Today the hospital is still fully active. We are thankful to have special permission to document the history of one of the last remaining Kirkbride buildings in operation.
