West Philly High
The West Philadelphia High School opened in 1912 as the city's first secondary school west of the Schuylkill River. The school took up an entire city block in West Philly. The student population quickly soared to over 5,000 and the city was compelled to build additional schools to keep up with the student population. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. In 2011, the school was shuttered for a smaller school built nearby due to declining student population. Today the property is in the process of being redeveloped into a luxury mixed-use housing development.
