For anyone who has seen the show Stranger Things, this will be a familiar-looking location. The property is, in fact, a former psychiatric hospital. The hospital was opened in 1965 in close proximity to a well established University. The state, along with the University, is responsible for establishing the hospital. Along with treating mental illness, the hospital was used as a research and teaching facility as well. The hospital closed in 1997 with a 141-bed capacity. The property was transferred fully to the University who have various proposals on what to do with the vacant facility. In the meantime, they rented the property out to Netflix for the filming of Stranger Things.
